Organ Scholar Vacancy
The Dean and Chapter of Cathedral Isle of Man, together with the Trustees of the St German’s Cathedral Foundation for Music and the Arts, invite applications for the Organ Scholarship, tenable for one year from September 2019, succeeding Mr Christopher Beaumont.
The Scholarship provides high standards of training in a Cathedral environment, helping the successful candidate to develop skills in service playing and accompanying, sight reading, transposition and improvisation, solo repertoire and choir training. The Organ Scholar will participate in major Diocesan and State occasions, as well as having the opportunity to play for regular services. He or she will be fully involved in the life of the Music Department, under the direction of the Organist & Director of Music, Dr Peter Litman. The position will be particularly attractive to candidates considering a portfolio career, including work in schools. In addition to Cathedral duties, the Organ scholar will be expected to coordinate an increasingly growing schools outreach programme, currently involving approximately seven hours a week spread over five schools. A clean (full) driving licence is therefore required. In addition to being interviewed, short-listed candidates will be asked to play two contrasting pieces (one of which should be from the Baroque period) and demonstrate their skill at playing a Cathedral service and fluency in sight-reading and improvisation. The Scholarship is worth in the region of £4,000 with an additional £1,000 subsidy for ‘back to UK’ travel (on presentation of receipts), plus rent free accommodation. In addition, there will be opportunity to enhance income through private tuition and playing for external occasional services. The Organ Scholar is expected to be ‘in residence’ during Choir terms.
Applications should be made to: Dr Peter Litman, The Cathedral Office, Albany Road, Peel, Isle of Man IM5 1JS, and should clearly state the names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of two referees, one of whom should be able to attest to the suitability of the candidate. All applications will be acknowledged and those short-listed will be invited for an interview. Any offer is conditional upon satisfactory DBS and security clearances. Please contact Dr Peter Litman (07624 226356 or firstname.lastname@example.org) for an informal chat regarding the position.
